Job Overview

Absa's Corporate Actuarial team in Sandton is looking for a Senior Actuary to drive delivery of experience investigations and assumption setting — including best practice — enabling sound management of business performance and financial risk across the insurance value chain.

The role modernises how investigations are done: improving statistical tests, data quality and structures, introducing machine learning and AI capabilities to support assumption setting, and developing management information that leads to business action. You will build robust controls so assumptions are accurately reflected across the value chain and, as a senior team member, own deliverables for the wider Corporate Actuarial function.

You will lead a team of actuarial students, support their exam progression, and deliver to business-line CFOs, Exco and Board committees as well as external stakeholders such as the HAF, auditors and cell captive businesses. Requires a Fellow Actuary with 7+ years in corporate actuarial life office valuations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive delivery of experience investigations and assumption setting, including first-line quality assurance

  • Improve investigation techniques: statistical tests, data quality and structures, and machine learning to support assumptions

  • Drive implementation and adoption of modern, robust tools, including AI capabilities where appropriate

  • Research the macro environment and relevant international trends

  • Develop management information that results in business action

  • Develop robust controls so assumptions are accurately reflected across the insurance value chain

  • Lead a team of actuarial students and support talent development and exam progression

  • Deliver to internal stakeholders (business-line CFOs, Exco, Board committees) and external stakeholders (HAF, auditors, cell captives)

  • Drive continuous improvement and mitigate key-person risk dependencies

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science (required)

  • Qualified Fellow Actuary

  • 7+ years' experience in corporate actuarial life office valuations

  • Exposure to machine learning and AI beneficial

  • Preference in line with the Group's employment equity policy
