Requesting references the right way

When to request references, what candidates see, and how to read the peer review signal.

Video walkthroughs are coming soon. Until then, the written steps below cover the same ground.

Quick start

Five steps to get value from POP in your first week.

Each step builds on the previous one. You don’t need to do them in one sitting — most teams space them over a few days.

  1. 01

    Sign up as an employer

Create an account and pick your company. If your company already exists on POP someone else may have created the claim — we will route you to request access. Otherwise you create the company record.

    Create your account
  2. 02

    Verify your company

Confirm your work email on the company domain (Domain Verified) and submit a name match (Name Verified). Fully verified employers show up with a green badge across the platform and unlock the full feature set.

    How verification works
  3. 03

    Search candidates and request references

Browse the verified candidate database, filter on trust signal and verified roles, and request access to references on the candidates you want to take further.

    Search the database
  4. 04

Post jobs and add screening questions

Publish roles to the POP job feed and attach custom screening questions. Applicants come in pre-verified so screening time goes to candidates who match.

    Post your first job
  5. 05

Verify the role claims of your current and past employees

Confirm — or dispute — the role claims candidates make against your company. Doing this on the platform raises the trust signal for everyone and is the foundation of the network effect.

    Verify role claims

Before vs after verification

What changes when you’re a verified employer.

Without verification

You can already do this on day one.

  • Create an employer account and claim your company
  • Invite team members with role-scoped access
  • Browse public profiles and trust scores
  • See verified role claims against your company
  • Verify or dispute role claims made by candidates
  • Request verification on specific candidates (peers, docs, email)
  • See which of your candidates have been verified

After verification

Everything POP was built for.

  • Post jobs to the POP job feed
  • Add custom screening questions to job posts
  • Search the verified candidate database with filters
  • Request access to a candidate’s references
  • Send privacy-first contact requests
  • Show a Fully Verified badge on your company profile
  • Disputes from your company carry full weight

The full toolkit

Every employer feature, explained.

Each section here matches a tab in your employer dashboard sidebar. Scan, or jump to the one you need.

Verify your company

Domain Verified, Name Verified, Fully Verified

Company verification is the gate to everything else. POP recognises three states, each surfaced as a coloured badge across the platform.

  • Domain Verified — you confirmed an email on the company’s primary domain. This is the lightweight check that unlocks job posting and candidate search.
  • Name Verified — you submitted documentary proof that the legal entity matches the company name on POP. Reviewed by the POP team.
  • Fully Verified — both checks passed. Your company badge turns green across candidate views, job listings, and reference requests.
  • If a Name Verified company submits a dispute against a candidate, the dispute is treated as authoritative until the candidate responds.

Post and manage jobs

Jobs that show up in trusted job feeds

Jobs posted by verified employers appear in the POP job feed and on candidate-facing search pages. Verified employer status lifts visibility and applicant quality.

  • Write the job description, set location and industry, and pick whether the role is remote, hybrid, or on-site.
  • Verified Employer badges surface next to your role on the public job board.
  • Edit or close listings at any time — closed listings stop accepting applications but stay visible on your company page.
  • Track applicants, their trust scores, and their verified role claims in one place.

Screening questions

Filter on what matters to you

Attach a short list of custom questions to each job. Candidates answer when they apply and you see the answers alongside their verified profile.

  • Pick from question types: short answer, long answer, multiple choice, yes/no, or numeric.
  • Mark a question as required to block applications that skip it.
  • Reuse a question set across multiple jobs — build a library once.
  • Combine screening answers with Trust Score and verified roles to triage faster.

Verify role claims

Confirm who really worked at your company

When a candidate adds your company to their work history, the claim is visible to you. Verifying or disputing those claims is what makes Trust Scores meaningful.

  • Confirm a role claim with one click — the candidate’s Trust Score reflects the verification immediately.
  • Dispute a claim if the candidate never worked at the company, or worked there in a different capacity than stated.
  • Disputes route to the candidate to respond, then to POP admins to rule. The audit trail is visible to both parties.
  • Verifying claims you know to be true raises the trust signal for the whole network — your verified alumni become a recruiting asset.

Verify candidates

Bulk verification on the people you want to hire

For candidates moving deeper into your hiring process, request that they complete a structured verification — documents, peers, and email — against the roles that matter to you.

  • Pick the role you want verified on a candidate’s profile and trigger a verification request.
  • Candidates receive a guided flow to upload documents and nominate peers.
  • You see verification progress in real time and can advance the candidate when verification meets your bar.
  • Verification artifacts persist on the candidate’s profile — you don’t need to redo the work for the next role.

Contact requests and references

Privacy-first outreach to verified candidates

Candidates control whether and when their contact details are shared. POP brokers the request — you describe the role, the candidate decides whether to share.

  • Send a contact request from a candidate profile. The candidate sees your company, your role description, and approves or declines.
  • Request reference access on specific roles. The candidate approves and you see the underlying peer reviews.
  • Track pending and active grants under Contact Requests in your dashboard.
  • Contact requests require an active subscription — reference access is included with most tiers.

Team management

Invite teammates with the right access

Bring your hiring team onto POP under one company account. Each invite is scoped to a role with a defined permission set.

  • Admin — full access including billing and team management.
  • Full access — everything except billing and inviting members.
  • Recruiter — day-to-day hiring access: jobs, screening, search, candidate verification.
  • Billing — subscription and invoices only, no candidate access.
Open Team Management

Subscription and billing

Pricing tiers and what they unlock

Most employer features require an active subscription. Billing roles see invoices, payment methods, and tier changes — they don’t see candidate data.

  • Free tier — claim your company, see role claims against it, post limited jobs.
  • Paid tiers — unlock database search, contact requests, screening questions, and team seats.
  • Subscription status surfaces in the dashboard sidebar and as a badge on your company profile.
  • Cancel any time. Active grants on candidates remain valid for the period already paid.
Open Subscription & Billing

Company verification

Verification and compliance documents

Upload the documents needed to support Name Verification, plus anything else your hiring process produces. Admins and Full Access roles can view and manage.

  • Submit incorporation, tax, or domain ownership documents for Name Verification.
  • Store internal compliance documents that reviewers need to see.
  • Documents are stored encrypted and only visible to roles with the company_documents permission.
Open Verification

Disputes

When a role claim isn’t accurate

Disputes are how Fully Verified employers correct the record. Use them when a candidate has claimed a role they didn’t hold, or has misrepresented their role at your company.

  • File a dispute from the Verify Role Claims tab — you describe what is wrong.
  • The candidate is notified and can respond with documentation.
  • If unresolved, POP admins make a final ruling. The outcome is visible on the candidate’s profile.
  • Disputes from Fully Verified employers carry significant weight. Use them deliberately.
