Mobile Engineering Lead – Member App Platform
Job Overview
Virgin Active South Africa is appointing a Mobile Engineering Lead in Cape Town (permanent; reference 210505; posted 3 November 2026; apply before 2 January 2027). As Virgin Active transforms into a Social Wellness Club, it is consolidating its core member-engagement platform – the mobile app and related services – into a central team owning a unified codebase for faster feature rollouts across multiple countries.
The Engineering Lead drives architecture, design and development of the mobile app and backend integration services, stays hands-on with code, sets coding standards and reviews, mentors a team of 5+ engineers, and partners Product, Design, Data and Operations to deliver reliable, secure and scalable software.
Key Responsibilities
Lead design and architecture for mobile and backend integration systems
Set coding standards, run code reviews and promote engineering best practice
Contribute hands-on to development while acting as primary contact for complex technical challenges
Own delivery of technical initiatives from design through deployment
Ensure system reliability, performance and security; drive continuous improvement in architecture and process
Collaborate with Product and Design on priorities and backlog; communicate progress, risks and trade-offs to leadership
Mentor engineers on technical skills, architecture and problem-solving
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience
8+ years’ professional software development, including 3+ years as Engineering/Tech Lead
Proven ability to lead a team of 5+ developers while remaining hands-on
Deep expertise in native or cross-platform mobile development; Kotlin Multiplatform advantageous
Experience integrating mobile apps with backend systems, RESTful APIs and third-party services, including payments (Adyen, Stripe, Peach Payments)
Exposure to CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, DevOps and Agile/Scrum
